Thoughts on plein air painting, working with gouache, and capturing California light.
Welcome to the Burbank Studio notes. Here I share reflections from painting outdoors on location, sketchbook studies, gouache techniques, and new works in progress.
Painting on Location
Plein air painting requires working directly with shifting elements:
- Fast-changing morning and afternoon light
- Shadows that migrate across tree canopies and streets
- Distilling complex scenes down to bold shapes and pure value relationships
“To paint outdoors is to record not just a subject, but a fleeting slice of time and atmosphere.”
Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes breakdowns of ongoing studies and newly completed works.
